Palapa Ring Finally Inaugurated
After stopping in 2007 and starting again in 2015, an internet infrastructure project in the form of the construction of optical fiber throughout Indonesia along 36,000 kilometers, the Palapa Ring was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on Monday, October 14, 2019.
The project consists of seven small optical fiber circles (for Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Sulawesi and Maluku) and one backhaul to connect them all. A total of 440 cities / districts will be reached by this fiber optic network.
The purpose of this network development is to realize equitable telecommunications, so that growth and equitable socio-economic development through telecommunications network infrastructure can be achieved.
The Palapa Ring project will integrate existing networks with new networks. There are three packages designed by the government namely the west, central and east packages. Cellular operators who want to expand the network to other regions can also rent this infrastructure. Tariff determination is based on investment value, market price, and number of service users.
West Palapa Ring
This network connects a number of districts and cities on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Functionally, this infrastructure has been officially in operation since March 2019. The fiber optic cable that stretches in this Western route is 1,980 kilometers.
Central Palapa Ring
This project reaches 27 districts / cities in North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and North Maluku Provinces. Ground fiber optic cable installed along 1,326.22 kilometers and sea cable 1,787.06 kilometers.
East Palapa Ring
This project was completed on 29 August 2019 and covered 51 districts / cities in NTT, Maluku, Papua and West Papua Provinces. Optical fiber cable installed 6,878 kilometers. The completion of the East Palapa Ring Project marks the completion of the Palapa Ring Project.
